Enna Chaton

Enna Chaton
Born in Grenoble (France). She lives and works in Occitanie (Sète).
PAYSAGES ET FIGURES, series
"Carbon arrived at a point where I couldn't draw bodies. I borrow the bodies from my photographs by making a blind drawing that allows me to follow the contours of the bodies, to make rubbings, to play with the different scales. Carbon is a print, like a photo print: I take a negative and make a positive." In MAZE, Rencontre avec Enna Chaton : « Peindre demande une intensité physique incroyable et une extrême présence », Marie Viguier, 20.02.2022.
HOMMAGE À SAINT AGATHE, series
Saint Agatha refused to have a man imposed on her, so they cut off part of her body (the breasts) Today, this continues with excision, forced marriage. This series is a small contribution to what affects me. The protocol is as follows: I invite someone to come to the studio and offer them a bun. I then draw the hands of that person holding the bun. In Sicily, the buns are shaped like breasts, in tribute to Saint Agatha. But what is also important to me in these sessions with the models is the off-frame of the relationship: looking at each other, sharing, laughing, discussing. In MAZE, Rencontre avec Enna Chaton : « Peindre demande une intensité physique incroyable et une extrême présence », Marie Viguier, 20.02.2022.
L'ATELIER, Photographies series
Enna Chaton, with L'atelier, opens the doors to a singular realm. There are no tools, brushes, easels, cutting objects, cameras, projectors or other concealments here, made visible at least. What, instead? The one hundred and ninety interior photographs that make up the series L'atelier show, in an undifferentiated space, the artist and his models at work, all naked and all equally busy with a "studio" exercise. A "workshop" exercise, or more precisely, if we follow the etymology, a preparation exercise - let us remember that the term "workshop" (atelier in French) has a common origin with the word "splint" (attelle in French), the first workshop in order of historical appearance being the place where splints were prepared, these pieces of wood used to consolidate broken or cracked limbs. Paul Ardenne "Corps et formes, tous ensemble, à imbriquer, à structurer", in "L'Atelier", Éditions de la Villa Saint-Clair, Sète.2017.

Biography

I put the whole photographer/videographer thing away around 2018. I was tired of the energy required by the logistics of performance. I wanted to unplug the electricity to find other tools and discover another relationship with the body and the gaze. I started drawing and painting (pencil, gouache, oil). My commitment is still the same (it is full), but taking a photo does not engage the body in the same way as when one draws or paints. I discovered, thirty years after I started creating, oil painting. Painting requires an incredible physical intensity and an extreme presence to what one is doing, which gives the sensation of being even closer to reality. I discover painting like a child discovers a language, it’s magical. There is something in the performance that is as fragile as when you make a pencil line. In MAZE, Rencontre avec Enna Chaton : « Peindre demande une intensité physique incroyable et une extrême présence », Marie Viguier, 20.02.2022.

In 2009, Enna Chaton passed the competitive examination to become a territorial art teacher, specialising in plastic arts, photography. In 1995, she graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Cergy-Pontoise with a Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique.
