If, according to Paul Valery, “the painter brings his body”, the body of the viewer participates just as much in this existence. There is, for everyone, “what reaches the eye from the front, the frontal properties of the visible – but also what reaches it from below, the profound postural latency where the body rises to see – and there is what reaches vision from above, all the phenomena of flight, swimming, movement, where it participates, no longer in the heaviness of origins, but in free achievements*”.
Seitenblick, or the lateral gaze in German, would like to evoke this way of looking at the works, not only from the front as if that were more engaging, but by considering the diagonal. To look with a distance, an off-centre attitude that would assess the relationship between the works. To grasp how each one moves singularly in relation to the other, in relation to the other presences gathered in a space. Seitenblick is perhaps also one of the paths open to the gallery owner, who seeks to bring together the different and the singular in order to grasp the presence of each artist in the world. This questioning, whose title is borrowed from a series by Muriel Valat-B, presents a first proposal. It will be continued.
